AIKMAN RATINGS
Through Week 16
With one week to go in the regular season, the Patriots remain in first place in the Aikman Combined Ratings while the surging Seahawks have moved into second.
Of the 10 teams that have made the playoffs so far, nine of them rank in the top 10 of the current Aikman Combined. The other team is the Bears, in sixth in the Combined and still the leaders in Aikman Defense. Chicago still has a good chance of making the playoffs.
The one team that has qualified for the playoffs without success in the Aikman Combined is Indianapolis. The Colts, whose season has been marked by close victories and a not particularly rigorous schedule, are 23rd in the Aikman Combined.
The NFL continues to use a “yards only” method to rank offense and defense. Combining the league’s rankings yields mixed results in determining success.
The Patriots, first in the Aikman Combined, and in the top five in nearly every subjective power ranking, stand only 12th when you combine their NFL rankings (1+27=28). Of the 11 teams ahead of them by this method, six are in the playoffs, the Cowboys could be and the Lions, Steelers, Panthers and Eagles will not qualify.
New England continues to dominate Aikman Offense just as it leads the NFL in yards. But after only posting a mark of 89.7 in the last four weeks, they have fallen off a record pace. The Patriots need an outstanding performance against the Bills on Sunday to reverse the trend and surpass their own mark of 99.0 in 2007 that constitutes the best in Aikman history, which dates to 1995.
