Thru Week 14
With their big win Monday night over the Texans, the Patriots have opened up a substantial lead of 5.1 points in the Aikman Combined as New England’s offense continues to thrive at record levels.
The Texans remain second in the Aikman Combined, followed by the 49ers. The two other teams with three or fewer losses, the 10-3 Broncos in 8th and the 11-2 Falcons in 10th, continue to lag.
Because the Patriots allow ample yards on defense, ranking 26th in the NFL’s yards-only method of determining defensive proficiency, there are nine teams with lower combined yardage numbers than New England’s 27th (offense 1st, defense 26th), including the Eagles and Lions (both 4-9).
However, in the Aikman Combined, the combination of an offense on a record pace and a middle-of-the-pack defense (currently 13th in Aikman Defense) puts New England in first with three weeks remaining.
We remind you that, like compilations of offensive and defensive yards, the Aikmans represent the accumulation of all 14 games to date, but some teams may be showing better or worse recent form. One team that is coming on strong is Seattle. The Seahawks were 16th in the Aikman Combined after Week 7, but have surged to 6th with their recent winning streak. Their dominant performance on both sides of the ball against Arizona last week advanced them from 10th to 6th.
